The Neuroscience Institute is deeply committed to fostering scientific curiosity and engagement within the broader community through a variety of innovative outreach initiatives. We proudly support four flagship programs:

For High School Students

NEETO

The Neuroscience Early Enrichment and Training Opportunity (NEETO) engages Chicago high school students and teachers in hands-on laboratory experiments, fosters interactions between students at different career levels, and exposes high school students to cutting-edge neurobiological research and STEM careers.

Students gain an understanding of common neurobiological concepts and questions, develop and apply practical lab experience, and prepare themselves for their undergraduate futures in STEM.

All research activities take place in the Carrillo Lab at the University of Chicago.

For Undergraduate Students

DARN

Developing Access to Research in Neuroscience (DARN) is an undergraduate summer research program designed to facilitate participation of undergraduates in wide-ranging areas of neurobiological research.

With robust exposure to areas in neuroscience and interactions with other fellows and UChicago graduate students, participants develop and apply practical lab experience, network, strengthen their confidence in STEM fields, and bolster their competitiveness when applying to graduate school, MD/Ph.D. programs, and beyond.

DENDRITES

Dynamic Experiences in Neuroscience to Diversify Research Internship Training Exposures for Students (DENDRITES) offers students professional development workshops and social activities across Chicago. The program hosts visiting undergraduate students to participate in an intensive eight-week research program under the direction of faculty mentors, introducing them to cutting-edge research methods and solidifying their commitment to pursuing research careers.

SEEDS

The Scholarships to Enhance and Empower the Development of Scientists (SEEDS) is a program whose goal is to increase the successful transition to and retention of early-career neuroscientists in academic positions.

It provides participants with long-term mentoring and professional enrichment, with a particular emphasis on assistance with preparation, submission, and revision of career development and research grant applications to NSF, NIH, and other private foundations.

This program is sponsored by the American Psychological Foundation (APF MFP fund), International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), Alzheimer’s Association, and Burroughs-Wellcome Fund.
